Kanz is part of the Kanz-Muhul: a traditional large mortar and pestle set used in domestic settings. The Kanz refers to the mortar, usually made of stone or wood and Muhul refers to the wooden pestle.

An integral part of the Kashmiri household, the Kanz-Muhul was used for pounding spices, husking paddy grains and grinding cereal grains into flour.
