Traditionally, the body (tube) of the Tumbaknaer is made from materials like clay (terracotta), and the head is made from goatskin stretched over the top rim.

It is an earthen instrument used as a percussion instrument at all Kashmiri festive events, Kashmiri traditional music and weddings. The instrument is thought to have originated in Iran where it is known as tombak or goblet drum. It is also similar to the Egyptian doumbek.
